 Studying Scriptures helps in telling these apart.  1. It reveals the character of Jesus.  Love and service are one phenomenal aspect in God's heart. If the word pushes you to love God and others more, then it's from God. If it nudges you into serving others, then it's from God. Overall, If it nudges you into being like Christ, then it's from God.  2. It confirms what he's told you before.    It's most likely that when you receive this word, God has spoken to you personally about it before. If not, then you're welcome to ask God for confirmation and if it's from him, he would confirm the word to you in various ways.  He could speak to your heart telling you that that word was from him to you, he could also let you see prophetic symbols related to that prophetic word, he could give you dreams confirming the word, etc.  3. It reveals a truth about you that you haven't shared with anyone. If a prophetic word is from God, it would contain a revelation...
