How to Test If A Prophetic Word From Someone Else Is From God

 Studying Scriptures helps in telling these apart. 

1. It reveals the character of Jesus.

 Love and service are one phenomenal aspect in God's heart. If the word pushes you to love God and others more, then it's from God. If it nudges you into serving others, then it's from God. Overall, If it nudges you into being like Christ, then it's from God. 

2. It confirms what he's told you before. 

 

It's most likely that when you receive this word, God has spoken to you personally about it before. If not, then you're welcome to ask God for confirmation and if it's from him, he would confirm the word to you in various ways. 

He could speak to your heart telling you that that word was from him to you, he could also let you see prophetic symbols related to that prophetic word, he could give you dreams confirming the word, etc. 

3. It reveals a truth about you that you haven't shared with anyone.

If a prophetic word is from God, it would contain a revelation of something good or bad that you may be going through that you haven't shared much as to have come to the knowledge of the prophet in a natural way. 

It may be something you're struggling with secretly, and God gives a word to encourage you on that part of your struggle. Or just any random knowledge about you that you haven't shared much but was spoken by the prophet. 

4. It draws you closer to Jesus

A prophetic word is from God if it contains helpful tips that would get you closer to God. It is from God If it admonishes you to spend time with God, if it tells you to pray or fast, if it tells you to flee from sin, to read the word, etc. 

5. It gives a scriptural and Godly instruction.

 

That's why there's a need to study Scriptures to know the type of path God would most likely lead you to. If the Prophetic word gives a biblical and Godly instruction, then it's from God.

 Godly Instructions like give out money to people, fast and pray, evangelize, leave a sinful/toxic relationship, etc. 

You would know it's not from God if it contains ungodly instructions like lie to your friend, steal money on the ground, commit immoral sin, etc. 

6. It chastises you with love

God chastises those whom he loves, when a word is from God, it doesn't emphasize your weakness or flaw or disobedience and leave you hanging, it lovingly trashes that weakness by giving you a charge to change. 

Even the word chastising you alone qualifies as God's word, 'cos Satan wouldn't want you to leave that sin or disobedience and he wouldn't draw it to your attention, only God would. 

If at all Satan wants to do anything about your sin, he, being the accuser of the brethren accuses you most especially of previous sin or addiction and makes you feel 'cos you've once commited such sin, you can't get anything from God and it's better you end your life or live with guilt.  

7. It is consistent

It follows a particular pattern that aids for consistency. It doesn't say something today and say another thing completely different and contradictory the next day. It follows a smooth pattern, and the next is almost like a continuation of the previous in a rhythmic order. 

8. It exhorts and edifies

A word from God encourages you and lifts up your spirit. It leaves you pepped up to take the next step in your faith walk. 

It also edifies by giving you hope in your trial, making you know he's with you and shares in your burden, challenging you not to give up faith but hold on to him. 

9. It comes to pass

This is the surest way to test if a prophetic word is from God, it gets fulfilled. God's word never goes unfulfilled, so if it's from God it would definitely come to fruition.

Deuteronomy 18:22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

The Prophetic word just given to you almost always does not manifest right away (although some do), so in that case we can also score this part by checking the track record of the prophet to see if his prophetic Words do come to pass. 

It could be prophetic word he's given to others, investigate to see which of them came to pass, it may be the one he's given to you before, joggle your memory to see which has manifested. 

If it's a word of knowledge type prophecy, then the Prophetic word must be true. 

There's a high chance that the word is from God if the prophet has a track record of his prophetic word becoming true or coming to pass.

10. From a vessel of Honour.  

He should also be one given to the word and prayer, living righteously, obeying God, etc.

God can use any vessel to prophesy; like Saul prophesied when he was in the company of prophets after his ordination, he also prophesied when he went chasing after David in Samuel's place, his army officers prophesied as well, Eldad and Medad prophesied outside the camp, Caiaphas prophesied of Jesus' death to save the world, etc. 

God can use anyone to give his prophetic word, but it's alot safer to accept prophetic Words from those that are living righteously in word and prayer.
